From: Richard Hackworth

Dear Martial Arts School Owner,

In 1992 I set out on a mission to meet the key people in the martial arts business in my area. What I found was that most school owners had absolutely no idea how to market and advertise martial arts schools. Some of them were amazing martial artists with a wealth of knowledge but they practically taught in secret because they had no idea how to attract students!

Fast forward to 2011 and only a few dozen of these martial arts experts still remain in the industry at all. And fewer still, just a tiny handful, had achieved their dreams of helping hundreds upon hundreds of students improve their life through martial arts training.

Of those who are no longer in the martial arts industry, there was a common theme. Faced with bills, mortgages, and car payments, these school owners had to abandon their dreams in order to get a “real” steady-paying job with a guaranteed paycheck – even though it meant giving up on what they had wanted to do since they were young Black Belts.

The fear of falling behind, not having enough students, and not being on the cutting edge of new martial arts marketing info (because they were too busy trying to find new students), caused them to leave the martial arts industry full of frustration, broken down and unfulfilled.

On the other hand, the few successful instructors and school owners had not only remained in the industry for almost 19 years but had built thriving martial arts school businesses full of students who referred friends, gave testimonials about their success stories, and supported these instructors passionately, like family.

What Were the Differences Between These Types of School Owners?

It all came down to choice and action.

The successful martial arts school owners invested time and energy to stay current on the cutting edge information in teaching students, they sought out mentors to learn from, and they networked with other instructors who shared proven, “from the trenches” advice on what was working.

However, they didn’t only do this for the teaching aspect of their school, but they also did it for the business and student attraction side as well. They differentiated themselves from their competition using proven student attraction and retention strategies.

They became the “go to” instructor and school in their community. They stood out and made their competition incomparable to what they offered. They were the stand-out instructors around town, always featured in the newspaper or on local TV.

The choices and actions made by the successful instructors differed dramatically from the fear and frustration felt by those martial arts professionals who – one by one, slowly but surely – disappeared from the martial arts industry completely.

The unsuccessful school owners couldn’t overcome all of the “McDojos” that opened up around them. They couldn’t compete with the low-priced community center programs that showed up in their neighborhoods. These frustrated school owners felt like they had worked so hard to build the need for martial arts in their community, and were devastated when new, inexperienced instructors would open up a school in their neighborhood and steal away their students.

There were days when these frustrated martial arts instructors felt like these new schools were literally laughing behind their backs at them.

The fear of not having enough students, the fear of falling behind the local competition, and the frustration of working from 5am to 10pm with too little to show for it drove them into a steady career outside of the martial arts industry, yet one that sucked the soul and spirit from them. But they had no other choice – they had to trade their dreams for security.
